| VIÑA PEDROSA LOOKS AT THE ORIENT. | |
| BODEGAS HNOS. PÉREZ PASCUAS INVEST 3.5 MILLIONS OF EUROS TO EXPAND THEIR INSTALLATIONS AND INCREASE THEIR EXPORTATION OUT-PUT TO SUPPLY THE ASIAN MARKET. | |
They keep the philosophy of building the house from the basements, it means from the vines, step by step, without hurries, investing in raw material, in lands and in vines. The brothers have been brought up amongst vineyards. They know about clones, rootstocks, varieties. The viticulture does not have any secret for them. His father, Mauro Pérez, who dedicated all his life to vines, he knew very well how to transfer all his knowledge about wines and vines to his sons and his sons have done exactly the same with the younger generation: José Manuel, Adolfo and Daniel, who run the winery with their fathers. Nowadays one of the challenges for Pérez Pascuas is to increase up to 50% the exportation out-put, mainly thanks to the Asian market opening, being the most important places: China, India, Singapur and Japon, "with great potential and future" they state. At the present moment, this percentage is 40% of its total out-put, and the winery exports to more than 35 countries, amongst the main ones: Suiza, México, Puerto Rico, Rusia and Nordic Countries. If you ask José Manuel Pérez, oenologist of this winery and visible head of the third generation, what the formula to success is , he will answer: "The key is keeping the regularity year after year, a well-defined style and the highest quality to compete at the top level. We have always wante to be out of commercial wines. Our wines are authentic and terroir wines, very limited production from Ribera del Duero, just half a million of bottles per year, " If we make more wine we will not have capacity to keep under control the quality. When we decided to build the winery, we just thought of a very limited production." They declare. Because of this, it is not strange that the winery is expanding his installations to work better, in a more efficient way, not to increase the production. Two new buildings will be part of the winery: One of them will be for the offices and the other for the ageing area. This extension will be in armony with the old buildings, and the Castilian stone will be the main protagonist. Regarding their wines, "Viña Pedrosa" is the trademark more reprensetative of this winery, under this label the winery puts on the market its crianza, reserva and gran reserva, which represents the 65% of the total out-put. But the star wine has other name: "Pérez Pascuas Gran Selección, whose vintage 2001 was put on the market last April. This wine is an authentic jewel almost 10.000 bottles and only in very exceptional occasions, to make this wine the grapes come from very old vines, vines over 60 years old. From one vine tree we obtain one bottle of wine, the yields are very low, just 1.5 kilos per vine. The last wine incorporated to the wines made by this winery is Cepa Gavilán and oaky wine which has aged or matured 12 months in oak, this wine was made by the first time in 2001. Other characteristic of Pérez Pascuas wines is that the ageing period for these wines is much longer than the period fixed by The Regulatory Council in Ribera del Duero. Moreover, the ageing room has 2500 barrels which are renewed in one third every year, this is a way to guarantee new oak for wine. |
